Sigurjón Brink

Sigurjón Brink (29 August 1974 – 17 January 2011), also known as Sjonni, was an Icelandic musician and singer. He is one of the founders of the Icelandic theatre group Vesturport, which received the honorable European theatre award in St. Petersburg.[1]

Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins

Brink was a household name in Iceland and participated in Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins in 2006, 2007 and 2010, the Icelandic national selection show for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Brink would have also participated in Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins 2011, with "Aftur Heim", but died before the first performance in the third semi-final. Sigurjón's family decided, on reflection that they would like for the song to remain in the competition, that it should be performed by Sigurjón's friends a tribute band consisting of Brinks real life musician friends.[2]

The group made it past the third semi-final into the final, where the group won the right to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, to be held in Düsseldorf, Germany in May 2011.

Death

During the evening of 17 January, Sigurjón was found dead at his home in Garðabær in Iceland, after suffering a stroke.[3] He leaves behind his wife and four children.
